Luke 9:23

"If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me."

Introduction - A Disciple

Being His disciple means putting aside selfish desires, shouldering one's "cross" every day and following Him.

 A Disciple

For the original twelve, this meant literal suffering and death.

For believers today, it means understanding that we belong to Him and that we live to serve His purposes.

A Disciple

Consider this:

Do you think your relationship with God primarily in terms of what's in it for you, or in terms of what you can do for Him?

A Disciple

Consider this:

Are you willing to deny yourself, take up your cross daily, and follow him?

Anything less is not true discipleship.

Galatians 5:16

So I say, "let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won't be doing what your sinful nature craves."

1-        As We Follow the Spirit

Being led by the Holy Spirit involves the desire to hear, the readiness to obey God's Word, and the sensitivity to discern between your feelings and His promptings.

As We Follow the Spirit

Live each day controlled and guided by the Holy Sprit

As We Follow the Spirit

Then the Words of Christ will be in your mind,

the Love of Christ will be in your actions,

and the Power of Christ will help you control your selfish actions.

Matthew 4:19

Jesus called out to them, "Come, follow me. and I will show you how to fish for people!"

2-        As We Follow the Call

When Jesus called them, they knew what kind of man He was and were willing to follow Him.

As We Follow the Call

Jesus was calling them away from their productive trade to be productive spiritually.

We all need to fish for souls.

As We Follow the Call

If we practice Christ's teachings and share the Good News with others, we will be able to draw those around us to Christ like a fisherman who pulls fish into his boats with nets.

1 Peter 2:21

For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you. He is your example, and you must follow in His steps.

3 -        As We Follow the Example

Jesus' suffering was part of God plan and was intended to save us.

As We Follow the Example

All who follow Jesus must be prepared to suffer.

Our goal should be to face suffering as He did -

As We Follow the Example

- with patience, calmness, and confidence that God is in control of the future.
